Steve Kelsay Trump Republican Decorah Iowa

Steve Kelsay certainly has fervent religious beliefs. His Facebook page shows that he is a fan of Lance Wallnau, a self-declared prophet who has announced that he talks directly with the Christian god, and is, with other members of the New Apostolic Reformation, creating what amounts to a new book of the Christian bible full of strange prophecies, often involving the imminent death or humiliation of Joe Biden. Followers of Lance Wallnau and the New Apostolic Reformation often decide that they too are prophets and have secret personal knowledge of what their god wants for the American political system.

This doesn’t make them ministers, though. Ministers are people who lead groups of religiously-minded people, ministering to them.

There is absolutely no evidence available that Steve Kelsay is a minister.

So, why did the Trump for President campaign add Steve Kelsay, a local politician and entrepreneur, to the Iowa Faith Leader Coalition?

Steve Kelsay is listed by the 2024 Trump for President campaign as a “minister” in Winneshiek County, Iowa…

…but there is no record anywhere online of Steve Kelsay ever working as a minister at any church or other religious organization.

Kelsay is a local politician, the elected Supervisor of Winneshiek County. He describes himself as an “entrepreneur, business coach and trainer, building people is my passion. With 40+ years of business ownership it is wonderful to invest in training others to do the same.”

Many people have a difficult time understanding why some Christians are such fervent devotees of Donald Trump. To grasp what motivates Trump Christians, it’s essential to look at what they actually say and do.

In the new book Donald Trump’s Army of God, authors Clifford and Anise Cook provide a case study of Christian Nationalism in the Iowa Faith Leader Coalition.

Instead of speculating, they looked at the evidence available to the public, and found murder, terrorism, a lust for religious war, fraud, corruption, bigotry, demons and Nazi propaganda surfing through the minds of Donald Trump’s Christian supporters in Iowa.

It’s a bizarre realm of faith-based fascism, but we can’t just dismiss it. In 2024, more than ever, we need to take this strange movement seriously.
